Regional Evacuation Center at San Jose de Buenavista, Antique

The Office of the Civil Defense (OCD) and the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) turned-over the Regional Evacuation Center (REC) at Brgy. San Pedro to the Local Government Unit of Municipality of San Jose de Buenavista.

Mayor Elmer C. Untaran received the ceremonial key to the REC from Director Jose Roberto R. Nuñez, OCD-VI Regional Director and Chairperson of the Regional DRRM Council, Assistant Secretary Casiano C. Monilla, Deputy Administrator for Operations of the Office of Civil Defense, and OIC-Regional Director Engr. Al Fruto of DPWH-VI.

Senator Loren Legarda, Governer Rhodora Cadiao and former governor Salvacion Zaldivar-Perez were present to grace the event.

Mayor Untaran underscored “When the heart is full, the mouth cannot speak.” He was grateful to all the people who had helped facilitate the realization of the REC. Mayor Untaran was deeply overwhelmed with the presence and support of everyone from the National to the Local Officials of the country, province, the local leaders and REC stakeholders, as well as the attendance of the constituents during the inauguration.

“The center should not only be an evacuation center, but a center of resilience and sustainability.” said Senator Legarda during her message. She encouraged Mayor Untaran to make the REC a model of urban gardening and solid waste management to other upcoming evacuation centers in the region. She stressed that disaster risk reduction and sustainable environmental practices were her personal advocacies.

The P36 Million REC started construction in 2017. Like other RECs in Western Visayas, it has an accommodation building that can house around 33 families or 130 persons, toilets and bath for males, females and for persons with disability (PWD), office and infirmary building, laundry/drying area, water tanks and generator room with generator set. ◙
